अज्ञेभ्यो ग्रन्थिनः श्रेष्ठा ग्रन्थिभ्यो धारिणी वराः।
धारिभ्यो ज्ञानिनः श्रेष्ठा ज्ञानिभ्यो व्यवसायिनः।।
(मनुस्मृतिः–१२.१०)
अज्ञ (मूर्खों से) की अपेक्षा ग्रन्थ पढने वाले श्रेष्ठ होते हैं, ग्रन्थ पढने वालों से ग्रन्थों को धारण (स्मरण) करने वाले श्रेष्ठ होते हैं, धारण करने वालों की अपेक्षा ज्ञानी (उनका अभिप्राय समझने वाले) श्रेष्ठ होते हैं और ज्ञानियों की अपेक्षा तदनुकूल आचरण करने वाले श्रेष्ठ होते हैं ।
Those who read the scriptures are better than those who are ignorant (from idiots). those who read the memories (those who recite) are better than those who read it, they are superior to those who are considered to be knowledgeable ( those who understand their meaning ) are superior. And those who are well-behaved in the way of knowledge, are the best ones.
